Direction grass grows on greens

Definition

The direction in which the grass blades on a green grow and lean. Grain significantly affects putting speed and break—putting with the grain (downgrain) is faster, while putting against the grain (into the grain) is slower. Grain is especially prominent on Bermuda grass greens.
